This message is for students on F or J visas, enrolled in summer courses, AND have health insurance through a graduate assistantship.
The Texas A&M University System Benefits Office has determined that the System Student Health Insurance Plan (SSHIP) cannot be waived for summer semester based upon health insurance provided by an assistantship or benefits granting fellowship. The Benefits Office is working on a solution for next summer.
This means the students on F or J visas and on graduate assistantships will be charged twice for health insurance, once through payroll on their assistantship and a second time on their tuition and fee account for the SSHIP. After the end of the summer semester, the health insurance provider, Academic Health Plans, will reimburse students for the cost of SSHIP who are were double covered by the graduate assistant employee insurance and the SSHIP. The reimbursement will only be for the periods that the student has both coverages.
If the student is unable to pay the SSHIP fee, then the student may apply for a short-term loan,sfaid.tamu.edu/stlapp/.
Please be aware that the student can apply for financial assistance at financialaid.tamu.edu/Apply-for-Aid/ISFAA and apply for Emergency Aid at financialaid.tamu.edu/Emergency-Aid.
While is outside of our control, we apologize for this situation. Please contact us at iss@tamu.edu if you have any questions.
