Changes for the Fall 2020 Teaching Assistant Institute (TAI)

The Fall 2020 Teaching Assistant Institute (TAI) will be facilitated virtually. Participation in the virtual Institute is mandatory for all new Teaching Assistants (TAs) in your departments serving as recitation leaders, laboratory instructors, or full responsibility lecturers.

Participant Requirements for the Fall 2020 Virtual Teaching Assistant Institute (vTAI)

To earn the Certificate of Completion from the vTAI, new Teaching Assistants should

  1. register for a Virtual TAI small group session in the Event Registration System (ERS) by Monday, August 3, 2020* at https://ers.tamu.edu/event/8066. (New TA’s have their choice of dates and times and are encouraged to register early.)
  2. complete the TAI Online Preparation Course in Gateway by Monday, August 10, 2020. (Instructions for accessing the course can be found at http://cte.tamu.edu/Graduate-Student-Support/Teaching-Assistant-Institute.)
  3. complete TAI content modules in eCampus by, Monday, August 10, 2020. (New TAs will ONLY be given access to the modules in eCampus following registration for a Virtual TAI small group session. (See item #1 above.) New TAs having registered for a Virtual TAI small group session will be given access to content modules in eCampus beginning Monday, August 3, 2020. Modules should be completed by August 10, 2020.)

More information can be found at the Center for Teaching Excellence website (http://cte.tamu.edu/Graduate-Student-Support/Teaching-Assistant-Institute).

*The Virtual TAI small group session is designed to be interactive, providing new TAs with the opportunity to discuss principles of teaching and learning for both face-to-face and online classroom environments highlighted in the eCampus modules. (See item #3.)  Discussions and activities within the Virtual TAI small group session will be led by TA Mentors and Graduate Teaching Consultants. The session is 2.5hrs in duration. TAs will not be assigned to a session date based on their departments. As such, Teaching Assistants are encouraged to sign-up early for their preferred choice of a session date, August 11th, 12th, 13th, or Saturday, September 5th, that is not in conflict with prior scheduled trainings within their departments. Currently, there are 40 seats for each of the sessions. Four sessions will be facilitated per day. TAs only need to sign-up for one session.

Adding TAs in the TATEP Compliance System

As last semester, all TAs (whether new or returning to a TA assignment) should be added within the TATEP Compliance System. Please add your TAs at https://aitsapps.tamu.edu/tatraining/ by August 10, 2020.  Instructions for adding TAs in the TATEP Compliance System can be found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OhKXS4-3N-Q&feature=youtu.be.

Additional information, including a sample email outlining Fall 2020 TAI requirements and changes that can be shared with your new TAs, will be provided in a subsequent email.
